Our History

Sparta Youth Lacrosse was founded in January of 1993 by Gary and Gail Clemens.

The Clemens and their two sons (both lacrosse players in previous areas of residence) moved to Sparta in September, 1992.  Since both Clemens boys enjoyed the game so intensely and no program existed in the immediate area, Gary and Gail decided to attempt to set up a Jr. High School Lacrosse Club in Sparta.

They contacted The National Lacrosse Foundation in Baltimore, Maryland for advice and placed an advertisement for interested players and coaches in the local newspapers.  Though not overly optimistic that anyone would express interest, their initial concern was quickly overcome when they started receiving dozens of phone calls from interested parents, potential players, and most importantly, coaches.  The first 5 or 6 phone calls came from former college lacrosse players living in the area and anxious to get involved.  In addition, over 55 boys expressed initial interest in playing.  Eventually, 27 of those boys ended up playing the first year...and so began Sparta Youth Lacrosse, know back then as the Sparta Lacrosse Club.

Initial practices were held on a practice field behind Vo-Tech and were quite a challenge to all.  Since most of the boys had never played lacrosse they had no basic lacrosse skills.  Catching and throwing the ball properly was more an adventure than reality.  The situation appeared bleak initially and concern existed that the boys would give up in frustration.  However, that didn't happen and soon they improved to the point of being ready for competition.

Our first game was against a seasoned Randolph Club and we won by 7 points, on their own field.  The boys didn't even have uniforms for their first 4 games, but that didn't matter...not only was the Sparta Lacrosse Club actually playing, but we were holding their own against well established clubs.  By season end we had played 11 games (all away) and won 6 of them.  Already the talk was 'next year'...

The 2nd year started with more coaches, more players and a group of high schoolers anxious to play as well.  Sparta Lacrosse joined the Northern New Jersey Lacrosse League which enabled us to place better competition.  Sparta Recreation Department set up a home field for us at White Lake Road and we continued to practice and grow.  By the end of the season we had beat several long term and highly rated New Jersey clubs including Morristown, Randolph, West Windsor, and Kinnelon.

As the years went on, the Sparta Lacrosse Club developed a program well recognized by other townships for the quality of our players, our capable coaches and our enthusiasm for playing competitive lacrosse.
